At first, swept up in the author s charming and sardonic style, this seemed a promising short in the Gautierian mould, before lapsing into melodrama and a typically hysterical ending The author is best known for the short story Carmen, based on the highly successful opera and TV series starring Julie Delpy as a mushroom.

Picked this up on a whim at Half Price Books a while back Sometimes that works out well for me, this time it did not This was a pretty standard moral tale for its time, complete with the misogyny Gotta love how the men in these books that are involved in the affair always get off scott free, while the women either die literally or end up penniless Very predictable The only redeeming point was the smattering of witty social insights This is what I get for buying cheap books without knowing anything about the author plot beforehand _

This book was too far removed from modern times to be enjoyable The story was mildly interesting, but reading about the stuffy etiquette of 19th century France was sometimes comical and often boring Not to mention, the ending seemed way too drastic, out of the blue, and inappropriate for the plot.I m not a fan of older literature, and admittedly, that might be why I couldn t enjoy this book.
