Take something well defined and then apply a left field idea Approach thoroughly and with total dedication and you get a book like this Heavy Rock does indeed have multiple variations and sub genres and the obvious in joke of heaviness applied to Bands instead of Elements just about translates The Groupings of the real Periodic Table and how these have been translatedsubverted is the real triumph here Of course the band choices are open to dispute that's the whole point Ratt Suzi uatro Ten Years After? and I would have stripped out the obvious comedy entries but it practically demands you create your own version and find some Rock mates to debate it with Overall a fun little read that makes a great present for aficionados like me that love taking lists and categorisations a bit seriously than is strictly healthy

The concept is pretty simple replace chemical elements in the periodic table with rock bands It's primarily aimed at rock music fans but a bit of knowledge of chemistry nothing too advanced helps with some of the jokes and puns The bands are grouped according to common properties in the same way as the real periodic table Each band has around a page of text that summarises their career and relationships with other 'elements' within the table These descriptions are actually pretty enjoyable and of a suitable length that you can pick up the book and read one or two at once or whole chapters as you prefer A good gift for any rock music fan but particularly if they have any kind of scientific background
