I almost never buy coffee table books on subculture, but being familiar with some of Ridgersiconic images I knew this would be the exception..only to be slightly dismayed at having shelled out my cash for a compendium of Fascists of the early 80 s That said, the photography is excellent and the images are really compelling, which sets this collection miles ahead of much of its counterparts It goes beyond passive voyeurism and hints at real personalities in an enigmatic place and time I almost never buy coffee table books on subculture, but being familiar with some of Ridgersiconic images I knew this would be the exception..only to be slightly dismayed at having shelled out my cash for a compendium of Fascists of the early 80 s That said, the photography is excellent and the images are really compelling, which sets this collection miles ahead of much of its counterparts It goes beyond passive voyeurism and hints at real personalities in an enigmatic place and time. The skins documented here fall into the categories of wannabe tough guys, eagerly posturing kids, and some genuinely disconcerting hard nuts.I was left with a profound impression of a subculture in its prime, something authentic and irretrievable And just how much youth culture has changed, for better or worse My only negative would be that in Ridgers descriptive narrative, his skinheads seem to exist in a vacuum there s a glancing mention of early Jamaican influence, but aside from that there s little of the culture on its continuum Neo Naziism is overwhelmingly depicted throughout the book with a shrugging caption of it was like that, and that s all with no further context Its difficult to glean how genuine the slogans and insignia and scowling faces are, but it comes across as one of the strongest themes of the images When in fact, the quasi fascism was a toothless fad, largely amounting to littlethan a sloppy justification for listless, angry teens The countering antifash skinhead movement was already gathering steam eg The Oppressed had already formed by 1981 The kids largely found work and grew up, and most put away the swastika armbands Ridgers sets a firm disclaimer as being an objective outsider, but for those unfamiliar with the subculture s history, this book is a potentially pretty jarring and subjective snapshot of the skinhead movement

Good photos but I expected the bookbalanced I know that in late 70 early 80s nationalsocialist skinheads were a thing but I am surprised to see that they were that huge Anyway, I thought that the book included some photos of trojan red SHARP skinheads and it s not like that It s about ONLY white power skinheads.I m sad because I would prefer a mixed one, showing the both realities in those days but
