The Curse Breakers is book two in The Curse Keepers series by Denise Grover Swank I have repeatedly admitted to my fandom of this author and this book most definitely did not disappoint me It has everything sweet romance snarkiness mythology and heart stopping suspense and action Ellie Lancaster is a Curse Keeper She is known as Daughter of the Sea She gets her power from the sea The other Curse Keeper is Collin Dailey Son of the Land Ellie and Collins’s souls are bound and maybe even their hearts but Ellie cannot trust Collin He has betrayed her at every step of the way It was his fault that the demons are now running wild gaining in strength It is his fault her father is now dead It is his fault she has a virtual bull’s eye painted on her back She is all alone now and she has to find a way to send the demons back to save not only those she loves but all of humanity But how will she do it? Collin won’t give her any information that will help her The evil Okeus wants her to pledge herself to him and the God Ahone has also claimed her but he won’t give Ellie his symbol so she can protect herself She has never felt alone On a fact finding mission she meets Dr David Preston professor of Native American Studies At first David will have nothing to do with Ellie mistaking her for another hormonal student trying to get into his class But when he meets her again at her family’s Bed and Breakfast when he has come to investigate the reappearance of the Lost Colony he realizes how deeply she is involved in everything that has been going on and agrees to help her David is a good man Can Ellie allow him to become involved with all this danger? Can she protect him? After what Collin did can she let someone else into her heart?Ellie is one of those people that you could say that if she didn’t have bad luck she would have no luck at all So many times throughout this book I was praying for at least something to finally go right for her Even with David’s help she can’t find the answers she needs Collin is no help And along with all the demons after her there are also some very bad men who want her as well thinking she has information they want And then there is Tom a very persistent police officer that is trying to put it all together He knows Ellie is involved that she is in danger and won’t let up his efforts to get her to talk to him So if you love a little bit of history mythology romance and suspense this is the series for you It has it all Thank you to Denise Grover Swank 47 North and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book I truly loved it and can’t wait to see what is next for Ellie Denise by now I think you know that I will follow you anywhere

Warning If you have not read the first book in the series this review contains spoilers You have been warnedA substantial improvement from the first book Ellie has her act together in this book She is actively looking for answers on her own Her attitude in the first book about drove me batty but here she is realistic in what she is doingShe is still pissed at Collin for his betrayal yet still drawn to him Honestly what she sees in him I have no idea Sexy good looks does not make up for a lousy lying manipulative personality In addition this book introduces another potential romance for Ellie While normally I am not a fan of love triangles this one makes some sense at least The police officer Tom is a much active role in this book He wants to help Ellie but is also determined to get the truth Then there is David her new interest who holds lots of knowledge and resources to point Ellie in the right direction The plot thickens as Marino steps up his game spirits want to kill her out of vengeance and Okeaus has some sinister plan afoot and Ahone is silent and unhelpful What is a girl to do?I enjoyed this one so much than the first I love how the author is tying everything together and it has me most curious for the end results This book is much plot focused which I appreciateI received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review All thoughts and expressed opinions are strictly my own

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE CURSE KEEPERS AND THIS PLACE IS DEATHI have to preface this by saying that while I like paranormal romance it's not something I seek out The thing is I used to love them I think I just got burnt out on paranormal because everything seemed to have the same old theme I love a good vampire story as much as the next girl but there just seems to be only so many ways you can vary the story That's why this series by Denise Grover Swank is so refreshing It's completely original I've never heard of another book referencing the Lost Colony and the Native American mythology was completely new to me While I'm not as big a history geek as my beloved husband I do love mythology of all types This kind of stuff fascinates me and I can tell DGS really does her research It actually makes me want to do some googling and see what I can find out about these Native American godsThis book is the second in The Curse Keepers series which is sure to be an intricate and action packed mysteryromance series I'm not sure how many books DGS has planned for this series but I can totally see her adding at least two I don't see how she can wrap this up in one book One of the reasons I love DGS is her ability to include several genres into the same book see the Rose Gardner mystery series A romance is a romance but this series gives you romance PLUS history mythology mystery horror and drama There's a lot going on but it's not overwhelmingIn the first book The Curse Keepers we are introduced to Ellie and Collin and a few supporting characters that I love Ellie tugged at my heartstrings right away She's working her tail off as a waitress while trying to help her step mother take care of her father with Alzheimers and an inn that has been in the family for generations She's worn out I felt for her and cheered for her and really wanted to slap her a couple of times for giving so much trust to Collin Collin is such a jerk at times but there are glimpses of a possibly good heart underneath all that Until the end of course when he tricks Ellie into opening the gate to hell which results in her father's sacrifice of himself to close it I'm heart broken for Ellie and actually a little for Collin as well As much as he has infuriated me throughout the book I know he loves Ellie as much as he knows how and he knows he's royally screwed up It's not a happy endingWe begin The Curse Breakers not too long after that fateful night Ellie knows she's a target for the evil spirits that have been loosed from hell She's desperate for help but not so desperate she will turn to Collin for help Yes it's prideful but I totally don't blame her The magical and physical draw towards him is still there but what has happened just makes it impossible to go forward Collin doesn't do himself any favors in that he is still keeping secrets When are heroes going to learn that keeping secrets to protect the little woman just makes that woman angry ReallyIn an effort to get as much help as she can Ellie connects with Dr David Preston a university professor and expert in Native American studies Yes I am now in book love with David Does it hurt that he has a British accent? Of course not I totally hear Paul Bettany in my head when he's speaking Jude Law will work too but Paul is my go to British love What I love the most about David is he recognizes that he is not the protector in the relationship He is a partner and supporter While he's not a curse keeper and therefore doesn't have any supernatural power he is of great help to Ellie Their relationship grows slowly into a solid friendship And maybe ? You'll just have to read it to find outWhile Claire and Drew have a lesser role in this book than the last I love that they are so there for Ellie Claire is a best friend that anyone would want You don't have underlying jealousies there They truly love each other as sisters and support each other Again Claire has no supernatural powers but she is a great encourager to Ellie She is essential I love that Myra has a bit of a role in this book You get to really see how strong the bond is between Ellie and Myra I feel better for Ellie's childhood knowing that she had Myra after losing her mom at such a young age and in such a horrible wayWhich brings us to the mystery Or should I say mysterIES Wow There's a whole bunch and it's just starting to tie together in this book Ellie's mom's murder which she is dreaming and remembering differently than how she's been told it happened; the Ricardo deal which Collin still won't talk to Ellie about cue frustration; the real reason for the curse and the agenda of the gods Yikes I feel like I need to keep a diagram or chart of all that's going on so I can connect it all as I read But like I said it's not overwhelming It's engrossing I couldn't put this book down and it wasn't because of romance It was totally because of the mystery aspect I finished at 145 am and woke up at 630 still thinking about what it all means What is the reason for the curse in the first place? Why did Ahone help Manteo and Ananias do this? What will happen now that the gate is opened? Will they be able to stop the spirits? Should they? What does the Ricardo deal have to do with everything and what involvement in that deal did Ellie's father and mother have? What really happened the night Ellie's mom was murdered and why was her murderer after Ellie? What will happen with Ellie and Collin and David and how does fate play into itI have an idea of course about all of this But I'm so going to enjoy reading the rest of the series to find out if I'm right In my experience with DGS she tends to blow my theories out of the water and give me something unexpected And that's fine by me Whether things work out the way I think they will or the way I hope they will I'm sure I'll be happy with it in the end I highly recommend this series You won't be disappointed

I enjoyed this installment marginally than Book 1 mostly because the plot took precedence over Ellie's un romantic romance with the insufferable Collin The new male lead I guess there has to be one because Ellie just can't help herself in than once sense of the phrase is professor David who initially comes off as eually arrogant and insufferable His redeeming ualities start to shine through soon enough though I remain unconvinced by their too soon mutual declarations of loyalty and eschewal of condoms I'm not sure why he's English however because it just seems like the author wanted an excuse to have a character say bloody and wanker and declare that his favorite childhood food was spotted dickWhich reminds me there are not one but two separate rape threat scenes in this book Three or four if you count the abortive sex scenes with Collin Women face the threat of rape in real life at an alarming rate but in this novel it just seems like lazy writing an easy way to up the stakesI did start to like Ellie again; she show backbone here as she grows into and learns about her role as Curse Keeper I wish we'd seen of her network of friends and family as well in addition to or perhaps instead of the expanding cast of Croatoan gods and spirits who at best reuire willful blindness about real life Native Americans and Native American beliefs and at worst are just offensive At least there were scenes set at the site of the discovered Lost Colony of Roanoke and stuff with cool artifacts such as the watchesAfter reading these two installments I'm sorry to say I will not be reading Book 3 I'm not interested enough in the outcome of the supernatural plot line to wade through the tangled threads of not one but two romantic relationships that I'm not enjoying much less slog through boring writingETA Because I enjoyed this marginally than Book 1 but still not enough to rate higher than 2 stars for It Was Okay I'm actually lowering my rating to 1 star for Book 1 Just in case anyone happens upon my reviews and wonders why I'd bother reading a seuel to a book that I did not like Plus I received a personal invite to access an ARC of this book via NetGalleyETA2 Ugh I just can't in good conscience rate this higher than 1 star I did not like it at all

I was in complete turmoil all the way through this bookDon't get me wrongIt was a great bookIt is just that what transpired in the pages of this book kept my stomach in knotsNow while I understood Ellie's anger and distrust toward Collin I still really like him But this is kind of jumping aheadOkthere is so much to this story Action packed filled with suspense; I was holding my breath the whole time waiting to see just what was going to happen to this little firecracker of a curse breaker known as EllieShe learns so much in this book and there are pieces starting to come together sighs Still there are so many holes to fill to solve the dilemmas in her life though But she has enlisted the help of a young good looking college professor that specializes in the legend and lore of her problems and this is where the whirlwind of excitement begins to take offNow while I like the new guy my heart was already given to Collin YesI am taking sides and I am #TeamCollin all the wayLOL I can't help but feel that the chemistry between Collin and Ellie is hotter and much explosiveButI will sayDavid is a great match for EllieI just don't FEEL the connectionThe Curse Breakers is a fabulous second installment I literally couldn't put it down because so much happens to keep you going until you reach the very endAll I can say now isWhen does book 3 come out??? AhhhhhI need Fantastic series that if you haven't started it yetpick up book one now

Great follow up to the Curse Keepers This installment takes place right after the events of the Curse Keepers And although Collin and Ellie managed to close the gate unfortunately it wasn't enough Ellie is in even danger than before both from the angry gods and also from Marino Yes he's still around and yes he still wants Ellie Combine all of the above with the fact that Tom won't leave Ellie alone He knows that there's something bigger going on and all of it has ties to Ellie so not only is he hounding her every chance he gets he's also threatening to put her in jail for not being completely forthcoming with anything she knows All of the characters from the previous books continue on in this one with the exception of Ellie's father She and Myra are still grieving his loss and Ellie needs him than ever because of the serious turn the curse has taken There was a new character introduced Dr David Preston who agrees to start helping Ellie I didn't like him very much if at all For being a professor of Native American history he sure didn't know much And I found him to be an uptight stick in the mud with his reading spectacles and his spotted dick Dude spotted dick isn't that rare Sure it's funny but it's also available in most grocery stores and manufactured by Heinz I just didn't like the staunch bastard and really missed Collin At least he was exciting but I guess now Ellie has a safe option when it comes to suitors As far as the curse Ellie now has to make a choice Okeus and Ahone are demanding she does one than the other I was glad to see one of the gods be a bit frightening So far all of the gods and spirits that knock on Ellie's door have been uite laughable I started disbelieving the severity of their malice and anger because they never came across as such One aspect I really liked was in this installment vs the previous Ellie has the upper hand over Collin She knows than he does this time around and I really liked the fact that she is now taking the curse a bit seriously Once again the ending is cliffhangerish Still many unanswered uestions which I'm sure will be answered in the next book The Curse Defiers Really looking forward to that one and I hope there's Collin eARC received on behalf of the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

455 stars After having read and loved the first book in the Curse Keepers series I was so happy to get a copy of this second book for review It's been awhile since I've read the first so I was afraid that I would be fuzzy on the details of the first book but Denise has done a wonderful job of filling you in as to the events that happened at the end of the first book and she has done so where it didn't feel repetitive or like information overload Pacing It was so easy jumping back into Ellie's world so I am really glad I didn't spend the first part of the book trying to recall what happened previously I feel Denise did a great job with this second novel She wastes no time in picking back up where we left off and I was so heartbroken for Ellie and everything she's gone through Storyline When we first meet Ellie again she is a mess Betrayed heartbroken angry and hurt she is struggling to deal with the aftermath of what happened at the end of the previous novel She has gained the attention of Tom Helmsworth police officer and old high school classmate and he is not only concerned about her but is far too curious about the events that are transpiring in Manteo He isn't stupid and knows Ellie has a connection to everything that's going on but doesn't have proof Tom while not a bad guy just doesn't understand that there are supernatural forces at work and Ellie cannot divulge that kind of information to him Not only is Tom nosing around but she also has angry spirits that are after her now that the Curse has been broken and the gates of hell opened Seeking out Collin Dailey for help is the last thing Ellie wants and will hold out as long as she is able to I just felt so much for Ellie in this book After having lost someone very dear to her she is trying to get by the best she can but she also is in great danger She has one god who wants her for his own selfish purposes and won't give up until he has her While the other has also claimed her he is not going out of his way to help her instead she must make the journey on her own Time is running out for Ellie and she has to make her decision uickly before it's too late She seeks the help of Dr David Preston a professor of Native American studies After casting her off as a crazy person their paths meet again in Manteo and he can't deny the overwhelming urge to find out However David ends up being a true ally to Ellie and ultimately someone she can trust and depend on This second novel has a bit of everything mystery romance suspense and action And of course Native American lore which I really loved reading about Characters As I said earlier Ellie is a mess right now Yet she is still as determined as ever Not once did she just say the hell with it and want to give up She is in danger on multiple fronts and has to protect herself One of the things I loved about Ellie before was her compassion for others She will risk her own life to protect others and that is what makes her such a likeable heroine She is sassy and snarky and after being betrayed by the one person she needed most she is determined to stay strong She has moments of weakness where Collin is concerned as she can't deny the connection they share but she still manages to call him out on everything that's happened You go girl Collin Insert really angry face here I want to know what his deal is As much as I want to hate him for everything I just can't And my heart is torn What he and Ellie have is electric and they share a connection that no one will ever be able to touch Yet Collin's selfishness and his refusal to confide in Ellie are what separate the two even further Ellie doesn't trust him and without trust there's just no way the two can be together Collin will confuse you and then surprise you with his actions and I was left feeling really undecided about how I felt about his character I am not a fan of love triangles but I have to say I really liked David's character I'm unsure of the direction Denise will take their relationship in the third book but he is exactly what Ellie needed NOW She needs someone to care for her and treat her as an eual in all things and that is David He's also really sexy and British which is always a plus too Final Thoughts The Curse Breakers was an excellent second novel and I cannot recommend this series enough especially if you are an urban fantasy New Adult lover The odds are against Ellie and the fight is on to ensure Okeus does not succeed in his maniacal plans for her I have a feeling the next book will be an edge of your seat type of read as Ellie continues her battle against the ancient spirits that have been unleashed and want to steal her life force Received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review

Wow I loved The Curse Breakers even than Curse KeepersStarts off a little after the Curse Keepers ended the emotional pulls the character have on your heart are so strong Ellie continues on a long journey to try to make things right by sending the monsters back to hell for good In her journey she has so many obstacles but she has someone to help her Some complain on the situations of possible rape that almost happen Yes some complain in reviews that this is horrible but also this is not the author condoning this This is fiction this is not real I’ve read a couple books that the authors think rape is a turn on which sickens me No this author portrays the horror of almost being raped and how Ellie is a fighter and survivor time and again This is part of Ellie’s character and the story This book will have you on the edge of your seat and I am rushing to finish this review so that I can keep reading the next book
