It shouldn t come as a surprise that Jesus Christ was a rabbi and used rabbinical techniques to teach his Jewish listeners in First Century Palestine His words, however, have meaning for a greater audience that spans the globe and time Reading and understanding scripture is a bit like going on a scavenger hunt clues are everywhere It can become discouraging But God promises that he can be found by those who persist Deut 4 29 In that vein I picked up Roy Blizzard s book Mishna and the Words of Jesus It was useful but not as much as I hoped it would be The author spends most of the book on editorial comments on what Christianity got wrong yet he makes the amateur s mistake of treating Christianity as a monolith Of course he s right And of course he s wrong Christianity as a religion is the proverbial broad side of the barn that a target shooter can t miss He doesn t add much to that debate, in my opinion There are some fascinating insights though The great Jewish sages Hillel and Shammai were contemporaries of Jesus The author describes some of the spiritual controversies that were hot topics of the day and then places Jesus as a third school of thought that came down somewhere in the middle of them on divorce and the studying Torah vs actions debate The author speculates on the origin of the ideological schism between the Sadducees and the Pharisees and how the Pharisaical view of Judaism survived the Roman destruction of Israel He discuss the dualism that crept into Judaism, influenced by the Zoroastrianism of the Persians which led to the development of teachings regarding demons and the role they play in promoting evil Judaism saw Satan as an appointed servant of God who served as a type of celestial prosecutor to confront God s people and to provide opportunities for personal spiritual growth by overcoming adversity All in all, it s a quick read but not for beginners or those who have very little knowledge of the scriptures If you are looking for techniques employed by Jesus and elucidation of his teaching I would look elsewhere.
