This isn’t my usual type of read but as a young girl in the late 60′s and early 70′s I loved the clothes hair styles and music still do so I was drawn to the bookI liked following Sky’s journey and learning about her family history I thought her and her mom were little harsh with each other but loved her devotion to the ranch and other family members I really enjoyed reading her thoughts as she was meeting hippy’s for the first timethey were very funnyThe book has a lot going on family relationships tragedies surprises and and I felt many different emotions while I was reading itAt times Sky came across as a brat but I thought that just added to the story instead of taking away from itAll in all I enjoyed reading this book but I thought it was rather long at 364 pages and some of the scenes seemed to drag on a bit I think if it had been shorter I would have liked it Still I would recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy the unusual mix of ranch life and hippy life

This is the story of young Sky Skylark Daly a young woman living on a ranch in Montana at the height of the cultural revolution we call the Hippie Movement It was a time of massive change in this country for young people for people of color and especially for women But not in rural areas Living in a rural area of Montana I'm not sure it has gotten here yet Sky wants nothing than to work on the ranch her family has owned for generations She is the first born but she is not the first born male She idolizes her father hates her mother and reveres a great grandfather she knows only through family tales She has a PLAN and it's going to keep her ranching until it doesn't then what? The book follows Sky as she goes to California to try and track down and old boyfriend She meets a group of long hairs there but fails to bring her friend back She storms home and then manages to storm through life rarely stopping to think about anything or anyone but herself She hates her mother never gives a thought to anything her mother might be feeling and all that is wrong in Sky's life is everyone's fault but Sky's Her father is her idol until he proves he is just a man and yet it's still her mother's fault not his Her mother's reaction to a tragedy is bizarre to say the least and the book devolves from thereNone of the characters are particularly likable the plot rambles along and yet for some reason I kept reading to find out what happens Sky and her boyfriendlover Will research her family history and don't learn much The bad guys come the bad guys go Sky never really changed or matured I really can't figure out what compelled me to keep reading; aggravation? Annoyance? Wanting to see Sky grow? I don't know25

This novel followed the life and journey of Sky Daly from living in the cattle ranch D graduating from high school and having to leave D to begin a new lives elsewhere Her discontent with her mother who seems determined to make her life miserable was one of the main causes for the sudden turn of events in her lifeAs a girl she couldn’t continue the ranching tradition The only way she can keep ranching would be to go to California to try and track down an old boyfriend she thought can save her When she arrived she found herself in the middle of the hippy movement and revolution protesting the societal structures she wished to preserve She met Will Daniels who followed her to Montana He didn’t fit into her rural lifestyle but she gave in to his persistent attention When tragedy torn the Daly family apart Sky was forced to leave the D once again and she fled Montana to find a new life for herselfNews of a murder made her returned to Montana She took over the ranch and was faced with the threat and survival of the D I received this book for free through a GoodReads giveaway but only just got to finish the book This is the first novel of its genre that I have read and I did enjoy the storyline and interesting plot Thank you

I received this book for free through a GoodReads giveaway This book is definitely not like any other book I've read The chores of the ranch are complex yet simple all in one I didn't think I could keep up with the terminology of the itemswork habits of the ranch but easily followed along as I continued reading I find myself closely relating to the female main character in personality The unpredictability during travel how fast time goes by or some actions casual sex regarding lively people she meets along the way The book contains twists and turns I didn't expect which kept the plot interesting I would highly recommend this book to anyone

I was disappointed in this novel I was truly looking forward to a continuance of Susan's first book A Story of the West but felt like this was entirely different and except for the characters being related had no connection really Unfortunately the book needed a better editing job as well All in all though Susan is a good storyteller and I did enjoy the storyline of Liberating Sky Characters are relatable especially if you grew up in the 60's There is a lot of adult content in this book however with free sex drugs and language
