Beautiful, shattering Contrasting her first writing with her last writing The 1997 stories, drawing from Acker s experiences with the breast cancer that would eventually kill her, are heartbreaking.

I have to admit I skipped the two very play plays The birth of the poet and Requiem because I can never enjoy reading plays, as I don t enjoy watching musicals But as William S Burroughs says Acker gives her work the power to mirror the reader s soul so I decided to stick to what I could relate to And I have to say I could relate to some passages so close that it made me uncomfortable And I nothing but appreciate a book that is able to give me some strong emotions, helped by Acker s I have to admit I skipped the two very play plays The birth of the poet and Requiem because I can never enjoy reading plays, as I don t enjoy watching musicals But as William S Burroughs says Acker gives her work the power to mirror the reader s soul so I decided to stick to what I could relate to And I have to say I could relate to some passages so close that it made me uncomfortable And I nothing but appreciate a book that is able to give me some strong emotions, helped by Acker s powerful, dirty, messy and somewhat repetitive writing Her characters are utterly real and seem to embrace their flaws with desperation and pride they have some kind of honesty that allows to acknowledge their behaviour without glorifying nor demonising it, and to apply the same kind of reasoning to myself Burroughs was right
